WhatsApp has finally added the biometric unlock feature to its Android application. The social messaging application owned by Facebook in February of this year introduced a function in its iOS-based application that allows iPhone users to protect data in their applications using their biometric details. IPhone users can use Face ID or Touch ID, depending on the phone they own, to block the application. Now, almost seven months later, WhatsApp brings the same function to your Android application.

All Android smartphone users who use WhatsApp beta for Android can now unlock their smartphones using the fingerprint sensors on their smartphones. If you are a beta user of the WhatsApp Android application, you can start using this feature by updating your application to the latest version of the beta application: version 2.19.3.

Once you have updated the application, all you need to do to use fingerprint unlock in your Android beta application is to follow these steps:

Activate Whatsapp Fingerprint

  1. Open the app and tap on the hamburger menu on the top right corner of app.
  2. Next tap on Settings then tap on Account.
  3. In Account settings, tap on Privacy option.
  4. Scroll down and look for Fingerprint lock option. This option will be turned off by default.
  5. Tap on that option and toggle the switch.
  6. WhatsApp will then ask you to touch the fingerprint sensor.
  7. Next, WhatsApp will ask you the time duration after which you want the phone to lock. You can pick between – immediately, after 1 minute or after 30 minutes.
  8. Next, you can toggle the ‘Show content in notifications’ button on if you want to see the contents of a message that you receive in the notifications window and you are done!

It is worth noting that the biometric authentication feature of WhatsApp has undergone several changes in recent months. The function was called the authentication function when WABetaInfo initially informed it. This name was later changed to Screen Lock before being released as Fingerprint Lock for beta users of the WhatsApp Android application.

Returning to the function, now that the function is available in the WhatsApp Android beta application, it will not be long before WhatsApp implements this function in the main version of its Android application. Activate Whatsapp Fingerprint.

Latest WhatsApp beta for Android adds fingerprint feature

In February of this year, WhatsApp implemented the authentication function for iOS beta users, which allows you to use Touch ID to unlock the application. After more than six months, the feature was finally made available to Android beta users today.

As people saw in WABetaInfo, the fingerprint lock feature will allow WhatsApp beta users on Android to open the application using the fingerprint sensor on their phone. Similar to the authentication function in iOS, users can still answer messages from the notification screen and answer calls, even when the application is locked.

The function is available in the latest beta version 2.19.221 of the application. If you have already updated WhatsApp to the latest version and still don’t see the fingerprint lock feature, you should try reinstalling the application after making a backup of your chat history. In case the function still does not appear, all you can do is wait for it to activate, as long as your device meets the requirements.

To enable the feature, go to Settings> Account> Privacy and touch the fingerprint lock option. Once you enable it, you must touch the fingerprint sensor every time you want to unlock WhatsApp.

You can also choose how long the application must remain unlocked once you open it. You can have the function automatically block the application after 1 minute or 30 minutes. If you disable the option ‘Show content in notifications’, WhatsApp will no longer show the sender and the message preview when you have enabled the fingerprint blocking function.
